In a significant development, Maynard High School will be changing how Wednesdays are structured around student engagement.
Rather than being a completely asynchronous learning day, starting next Wednesday every student will enjoy a direct check-in with a staff member at least once during the day for at least 20 minutes. Though the timing of this is in response to a change in state regulations, we have been looking to extend outreach to students on Wednesdays and have been planning for a change for several weeks.
To accomplish the goal of engaging with every student on Wednesdays we already know that about half of our students are regularly involved in a meaningful activity that meets on Wednesdays including school based clubs, teacher led study session, work with Guidance Counselors around a variety of topics, receiving Educational support or is working with a staff member on a project. Those students simply need to continue doing what they have been doing.
We also know that about half of our students are not engaged in such activities on any given Wednesday and for that group we will be initiating a variety of fun Advisory activities on Wednesdays led by Teaching staff. Activities will include things ranging from Yoga to Current Events Discussion Groups to Origami. The goal is to give every student the opportunity to relax with their friends, even if only virtually at this time, around an area of common interest as a way to support their social and emotional well being during the ongoing restriction brought about by the pandemic.
This coming Wednesday, January 20th, there will be Class Meetings to fully explain the program and system to students. The meeting times and links will be out to students and parents by this coming Tuesday morning.
Starting on Wednesday January 27th, and every Wednesday that is a school day for the rest of this school year, Advisory Groups will be meeting as described above.
Everyone needs a chance to relax and have fun with their friends, make a meaningful connection with a trusted adult, plan for the future or enhance their skills. We are confident that this change in our Wednesday schedule will allow our students to do one or more of those important things.
Stay tuned as final details are sent out in the coming days.

New Flu Vaccine Information: No longer mandatory
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is removing the requirement for flu vaccination for attendance in childcare/preschool, primary, secondary and postsecondary education. Preliminary data show that this has been a mild flu season to date, presumably as people have received their seasonal flu vaccine and have been adhering to mask-wearing and social distancing due to COVID-19. Given the intensive Commonwealth-wide efforts regarding COVID-19 vaccination, DPH wants to alleviate the burden to obtain flu vaccination and focus on continuing our COVID -19 vaccination efforts.
DPH continues to strongly recommend that everyone age six months and older receive their seasonal flu vaccine each year.
